Ian Schrager's latest creation, Public Hotel in New York City, is a stylish, sleek and visual achievement in the art of boutique accommodation. Located in the heart of the Lower East Side, Public Hotel places itself firmly within Manhattan's cool kid district, surrounded by independent boutiques, trendy restaurants, coffee shops and lively bars. Within walking distance of two subway stations and the New Museum, and only a two-mile walk from the iconic Empire State Building, the location is ideal for exploring the city. If that isn't attractive enough, the hotel boasts 367 rooms, all expertly designed by Schrager's frequent collaborators, Herzog & de Meuron.
During our stay, we experienced the King Great View room, and the name really does live up to expectations. You're immediately met with breathtaking views of New York City in all its glory, providing the perfect backdrop for a stay in Manhattan. At approximately 220 sq ft, the room is a minimalist dream, featuring floor-to-ceiling wood panelling and gloriously triple-glazed windows that capture the impressive skyline while keeping the noisy city sounds at bay.
The room comes with an outrageously comfortable king-size bed, complete with a 50-inch LED flat-screen TV and an en-suite bathroom. Despite its relatively compact dimensions, the clever layout makes excellent use of the available space, creating a comfortable environment that feels both practical and luxurious. The minimalist aesthetic allows the views to take centre stage, while the warm wood finishes add just enough character to prevent the room from feeling clinical.
The room also offers a spacious dining and working area, complete with 10 easy-to-reach USB and plug outlets, as well as New York City's fastest wireless internet, making the space genuinely versatile. Whether you're catching up on emails, planning your next adventure or simply relaxing after a day exploring Manhattan, the layout caters to every occasion.
It's the attention to detail that makes this room a hipster haven and should not be overlooked. From the touch-controlled blackout shades and sheer curtains to the custom-designed lighting, everything feels carefully considered. The ability to adjust the lighting from a practical working environment to a more intimate, candlelit mood is a particularly nice touch. Combined with the impressive views and comfortable furnishings, the King Great View room offers a contemporary approach to luxury without sacrificing practicality.
"Thoughtful Details, Dining and Drinks at Public Hotel"
Public Hotel takes a holistic approach to accommodation, ensuring your stay is about more than simply having somewhere comfortable to sleep. The King Great View room comes with several additional perks, including an in-room coffee setup available upon request, perfect for those working holidays or anyone who enjoys a leisurely start to the morning.
If you're visiting during the spring or autumn season, as we were, complimentary Shinola bicycles equipped with helmets and locks are another welcome addition. They offer a great way to explore the trendy Lower East Side at your own pace, making sightseeing feel more local and less touristy. With so much happening in the surrounding neighbourhood, having the freedom to venture out and discover hidden gems is a definite advantage.
Of course, when you're not relaxing in your room or immersing yourself in the plethora of hipster coffee shops nearby, Public Hotel offers a selection of in-house dining and drinking options that complement its contemporary personality.
Popular is the lovechild of world-renowned chefs Diego Munoz and Michelin-starred chef John Fraser, bringing authentic, healthy and soulful Peruvian food to life in a way that feels cool, sophisticated and a little bit quirky. Guests can enjoy a meal in the vibrant, very "New York" dining room or dine al fresco under the stars in the Bowery Garden. The restaurant's approach fits naturally with the hotel's wider identity, offering an experience that feels modern and relaxed rather than overly formal.
During our stay, we also found the Cantina & Pisco Bar to be the coolest way to spend cocktail hour. Another creation associated with chef Diego Munoz, the bar provides a lively setting for drinks before heading out into the city or settling in for the evening. Naturally, it wouldn't be the Lower East Side without a little nightlife, and the addition of live DJs and Latin music after 10 pm gives the space an unmistakably New York atmosphere.
Having these options within the hotel is particularly appealing after a busy day exploring Manhattan. Whether you're in the mood for dinner, cocktails or simply soaking up the atmosphere, there's plenty to enjoy without needing to venture far. The social spaces also give Public a distinct personality, making it feel like a destination in its own right rather than simply somewhere to stay.
Beyond the hotel, the Lower East Side remains one of the most compelling reasons to book a stay here. The neighbourhood combines historic character with a creative, youthful energy, offering everything from independent shops and galleries to fashionable restaurants and late-night bars. Its subway connections also make it easy to explore other parts of Manhattan, while the nearby streets are ideal for those who prefer discovering a city on foot.
To experience Public Hotel is to experience New York City like a cool kid. Everything, from the striking skyline views to the location that places you right in the centre of the action, contributes to a versatile and unique stay that combines the comforts of home with the excitement of Manhattan.
What makes Public particularly successful is its balance of design, comfort and atmosphere. The rooms are thoughtfully appointed, the dining and drinking options are genuinely appealing, and the location encourages you to get out and experience the city. It's not traditional luxury, nor is it trying to be. Instead, it offers something more contemporary and individual, perfectly suited to travellers who appreciate good design and a lively neighbourhood.
A little offbeat in the best way possible, and exactly what you would expect in the hipster heartland of Manhattan, Public Hotel delivers a memorable city stay. We enjoyed our time here so much that we cannot wait to come back.
