Owned and operated by the same family that runs the luxurious and traditional Villa Spalletti Trivelli in the heart of Rome, the Pomario Vineyards are a must see destination in their own right. From here, the family produces a wonderful selection of wines and olive oil, and they’ve won numerous awards for both.
“A place of timeless beauty and fine wine.”
The farm is quite small, only about 10 hectares, and takes up the entirety of a single hill. It is located in the province of Perugia, on the border between Tuscany and Umbria. Somewhat isolated, by virtue of the thick forest that surrounds and enfolds it, it is easy to miss unless you know precisely where you’re headed. It is also a place of pure, unexpected beauty.
As of the writing of this review, three hectares are cultivated with Sangiovese, Trebbiano, and Malvasia. Three thousand square meters have been cultivated with a clone of Bordeaux Merlot, while another 8000 square meters have been prepared using a terracing method, and cultivated with Sauvignon and Riesling for the production of “Muffato,” which is a delicious dessert wine.
In addition to this, the farm boasts a small but productive olive grove that consists of a mix of trees, weighted heavily (some seventy percent) toward Frantoio and Moraiolo, with a minority presence of Leccino. The award winning olive oil that this grove produces is both intensely bitter and spicy, but manages to be both in an entirely harmonic way that leaves a spicy aftertaste with the flavor of fresh olive oil.
During our stay at the Villa Spalletti Trivelli, we enjoyed a fine meal with wine that was produced from this vineyard, and it was a glorious accompaniment to our meal. It is easy to see why. The same care that the family puts into the management of their Villa in Rome is also applied here, and to great effect.
