Located at The Pig near Bath, we spent the evening at their restaurant. The dining room had a relaxed feel with a rustic country chic to the decor. They serve up the best of British cuisine dishes that remind you of your childhood.
Their '25 Mile Menu' is a whole menu designed around ingredients sourced within a 25 mile radius of the restaurant. Head Chef Kamil Osak, and Chef James Golding deserve all the praise they receive, the dishes are superbly presented, and the flavours are executed perfectly.
We started the evening with a couple of pre-dinner cocktails. We had the 'Rosemary Collins', which is a Green Ginger Rosemary Infused Gin cocktail, with Chase 100% Apple Elegant Gin, Fresh Lemon, Elderflower and Soda. It tasted every bit as delicious as it sounded.
We also opted for 'The Drowsy Doe', a cocktail made with Lemongrass Infused Vodka, Heritage White Wine, Chambord, Elderflower, Apple Juice and Fresh Lemon Juice. Incredibly refreshing, a lovely blend of citrus and fruit.
We ordered a bottle of wine for our table. Settling on a bottle of Sangiovese, Chianti Classico Riserva, Monte Bernardi, Italy 2008. A pure and honest Chianti with soft tannins and nice acidity. A great choice for meat dishes, and very refreshing on the palate.
"The food was superb and the laid back atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for."
To begin we ordered the Pea and Garden Mint Soup, with Garden Herb Croutons. A light and flavoursome soup, the mint was strong but not overpowering. We also had the Home Smoked Duck and Asparagus Salad with Pickled Broccoli Sprouts. The duck was tender and delicious.
For our the main course we ordered the Oven Roast Withywood Farm Lamb Rump, with Caramelised Onion and Garden Greens for two to share. The Lamb is bought out to the table in one dish for you to carve as you wish. This was an enjoyable experience, and the Lamb was nothing short of delectable. The smell of the roasted Lamb was enough to start us salivating, and it was cooked to perfection. We had sides of Roasted Beetroot and Garden Kale, Buttered Potatoes, Roasted Carrots and Caraway. This is where the 25 Mile Menu really pays off, the vegetables tasted incredibly fresh. It's no surprise that they tasted like they had been pulled from the ground for our dishes, they probably were.
For dessert we had the Iced Cheddar Strawberry Cream with Mint & Honeycomb. A lovely dessert, very moreish. And, we ordered the Baked Rhubarb Batter Pudding with Garden Sage Ice Cream. The garden sage was an interesting flavour, I'd recommend it if you've never tried it. We had a wonderful evening, the food was superb and the laid back atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for.
