The Brew House Hotel is a city centre hotel in the middle of Tunbridge Wells. It’s a high class, boutique hotel that delivers on just about every promise it makes. Like many newer hotels, it is using its restaurant as a springboard for notoriety. This place is no different.

Being a city centre venue, competition is hot, so they have to pull something truly special out of the bag to be able to compete. Fortunately, we weren’t disappointed.

We were shown excellent service in the restaurant, the staff looked after us very well. Our waiter was knowledgeable and talked us through the dishes on the extensive menu, and even explained why they are popular choices.

I was in a vegetarian mood, and three options were offered to me. I asked for a standard dish but without the parmesan cheese, and this was no problem.

Our starter consisted of homemade root vegetable soup. We both ate the same thing as it looked so good! We’re glad we did. The soup was thick and warm and tasted rich and decadent. This would have been ideal on a cold winter’s night.

"Brew House Hotel Restaurant, a lovely, relaxing meal in a nice setting."

Our main course was homemade tagliatelle (without the parmesan), and beer battered fish with hand-cut King Edward chips and mushy peas. The tagliatelle was soft, cooked perfectly al dente, and was definitely homemade. The sauce was tomato-based with a hint of chilli and basil.

The beer battered fish was thick, meaty and lightly battered. There was no grease in the batter, and it gave a satisfying crunch. The chips and mushy peas were a great take on the English classic and were light and flavoursome.

We shared a dessert as we were quite full from the meal. We had a chilled rhubarb crumble and custard. Normally, I like my custard hot, but this made a nice change. The crumble was generous and sweet, just the way we like it.

Each of the three courses was of a very high standard, and very tasty.
