The Runnymede on Thames Hotel is situated on the banks of the river Thames in Egham, Surrey. It’s a lovely location, not far from Windsor and Heathrow, and easily reachable from the city by car.
First impressions are impressive from the exterior and lobby area, the building is clean and attractive, and the lobby is nice and modern. However the rest of the hotel doesn’t live up to it.
From entering the lift, the difference is clearly noticeable. The lift is fitted with an old carpet, which was obviously missed when they refurbished the public areas. Those areas such as the lobby, restaurants and terrace are that of a 4-star establishment. However we would say the bedrooms are the quality of a 3-star.
That isn’t to take anything away from them, as they are nice enough. It’s probably fair to say the Runnymede on Thames Hotel has delusions of 4-star, but can’t quite get there.
There are no suites here, it seems more of a business hotel than a leisure one. The functional décor, the plain, small rooms and starkness of the interior lend themselves well to corporate visitors, but not couples or groups wanting a weekend away.
We had a duplex room, which is the closest to a suite. It continued the functional appearance with a decent sized space, good bed, Wi-Fi, small desk and chair and all the other basics. There was an extra room separated by a curtain.
"The Runnymede on Thames Hotel has delusions of 4-star, but can’t quite get there."
The best thing about this hotel is its location on the Thames. The hotel has 2 boats which can be hired for an hour or two or the day, which is a nice touch. Picnics can also be arranged from a limited choice of basic sandwiches, snacks and drinks, it's a nice idea, but if you’re going to the trouble of offering a picnic at £15 per person, then the quality should be higher.
There is also an indoor pool, and a new outdoor pool added as part of the refurbishment. It has a nice terrace area that would be a great place to while away a sunny afternoon with a cocktail or two. They add a little extra to the stay, especially in summer.
Overall, the Runnymede on Thames Hotel has high hopes for itself, but fails to reach them. It isn’t an unpleasant place by any means, just forgettable. Which in this climate is almost as bad.
