The Marriott in Grosvenor Square, London is a 5-star venue that has one of the best addresses in the city. It’s a high-class hotel that works very hard to deliver.
Grosvenor Square is in Mayfair, near Park Lane and Oxford Street. That means competition is fierce and the standards high. Does the Marriott meet those high standards? Mostly.
The building is a classic red brick mansion house set behind black iron railings. Subtle lighting and clean stone presents a very reassuring, traditional greeting that is echoed inside.
The lobby is large, with thick columns and a marble floor. There is a series of reception desks, staffed by smart receptionists who take the handover from the concierge and greet you with a welcome smile. The paperwork is fast, and we were quickly escorted to our room.
“The Marriott in Grosvenor Square is a great place to stay but offers nothing truly memorable.”
The hotel is completely traditional, we would say a little dated with it. Everything is clean and looks almost new, but styled to be new in the late 80s or early 90s, not 2012. It detracts slightly from the experience, but not enough to spoil our stay.
Then we get to our Club Balcony Room and everything changes. We went from traditional to contemporary in one fell swoop. The decoration is light and modern, with the furniture being dark wood with distinct edges and unfussy designs. The king-sized bed was comfortable, the mattress firm but friendly and the pillows plump.
The bathroom was all marble with decent products, robes, a combo bath and shower, plus a separate shower. It wasn’t large by any means, but it had enough space for two to wash in peace.
The highlight of the room was the balcony overlooking the courtyard. It allowed us to really soak up the atmosphere. It also had a small seating area to make things more comfortable.
The Marriott Grosvenor Square ticks all the boxes on paper. It’s clean, tidy, has plenty of amenities and is in a great location. The slightly dated looks, plus the juxtaposition between the traditional and the contemporary just don’t gel for us. It’s a great place to stay but offers nothing truly memorable.
