The location of the Great Northern Hotel is such a prominent feature, given that it could not be any closer to King’s Cross station if it tried. Built by Lewis Cubitt in 1854, the hotel opens directly on to the Western Concourse of King’s Cross, making it a mere 25m from the Eurostar terminus.
The hotel boasts 90 rooms in total, across six floors. The rooms have been perfectly restored to encapture the original splendor of when the hotel first opened its doors in 1854, during London’s revolutionary new age of steam.
"...a celebration of British design and hospitality."
Having only re-opened in April 2013, the whole hotel has that exquisite sense of combining both the old, and the new. The Great Northern Hotel certainly brings a touch of elegance to King’s Cross.
We were lucky enough to stay in the Cubitt room, which was very comfortable indeed. The room was spacious, light and airy, featuring custom made furniture. Although the bathroom was a tad on the small side, it was very well designed, with a beautiful, traditional feature sink surrounded by polished white tiling. The Cubitt room is very stylish.
There’s always something about every hotel that makes it stand out from the rest, and for me, at the Great Northern Hotel, that feature is actually the hotel corridors. Normally, hotel corridors tend to be narrow and not much to shout about, however, at The Great Northern Hotel, the corridors are all impeccably designed and certainly wide enough for at least five people to walk down, side-by-side.
The other great thing about the corridors is that at the end of each one you have access to the pantry, where you are offered tea and coffee, as well as freshly baked cakes and biscuits. Certainly worth indulging.
The restaurant at The Great Northern Hotel, quirkily named ‘Plum + Spilt Milk’ is as stunning on the eye as it is on the palate. The décor has been appropriately adorned in deep plumb tones interspersed with cream colours. The Great Northern Hotel prides themselves on their simple and creative British menu, which certainly does not disappoint.
The service at this hotel is also faultless, with the staff being both attentive and efficient.
To sum up The Great Northern Hotel, you might say that it’s a celebration of British design and hospitality. The hotel is a stunning example of luxury in the heart of London, and I would recommend it to anyone as a must try.
