Located on the edge of Hampstead Heath in the charming neighbourhood of Highgate, The Bull & Last pub is an outstanding culinary destination that combines a cosy pub atmosphere complete with superb food. Known for its daily-changing menus tailored to seasonal availability, this establishment takes pride in using only the highest quality produce to craft a memorable dining experience. During our visit, we were thoroughly impressed by the exceptional food, drinks, and service.

As we settled in and browsed the menu, we began our evening with expertly crafted cocktails. I opted for a Bloody Mary, a masterful mix featuring Sacred Vodka, house spices, and a crisp celery garnish. The balance of spice and smoothness was perfect, making it one of the best iterations of this classic cocktail I’ve ever had. My partner enjoyed a Vodka Martini, a timeless choice prepared with precision and elegance. The chilled glass and silky texture of the drink set the tone for what would be a remarkable meal.

To begin, I chose the English Heritage Beetroot Salad, an artistic combination of flavours and textures. The earthy sweetness of the beetroot was complemented by the creamy goat's curd, while the crispy beetroot fritters added a satisfying crunch. The salsify and pickled walnut lent a unique dimension, tying the dish together beautifully. It was a refreshing and well-balanced starter that showcased the kitchen’s creativity.

"We cannot recommend The Bull & Last enough - not only for its outstanding dining experience but also for its beautiful accommodation offering."

My partner opted for the Burrata, a dish that was as visually stunning as it was delicious. The creamy cheese was paired with slices of delicate Nashi pear, adding a gentle sweetness, while the endive brought a subtle bitterness. Hazelnuts added a delightful crunch, and the vinaigrette brought all the elements together with a tangy finish. It was an inspired start to the meal, highlighting the pub’s commitment to quality and attention to detail.

For our main course, we decided to share the North Essex Shorthorn Prime Rib for Two, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The rib was cooked to perfection, with a juicy interior and a beautifully caramelized crust. The accompanying gremolata added a vibrant burst of citrus and herbaceous notes, while the classic béarnaise sauce was rich and indulgent. A crisp green salad provided a refreshing contrast to the hearty meat, and the golden chips were perfectly seasoned and irresistibly crispy.

To enhance the meal further, we ordered a side of Kale & Garlic Butter. This simple yet flavourful dish proved to be the perfect accompaniment, adding a touch of greenery and a rich garlicky depth to our plate. Every bite was a testament to the skill and care that goes into the preparation of each dish at The Bull & Last.

We paired our meal with a glass of Grenache-Syrah, a wine that complemented the robust flavours of the prime rib perfectly. The fruity undertones and smooth finish enhanced the meat’s richness while not overpowering the subtler notes of the accompaniments. It was clear that the wine list had been thoughtfully curated to elevate the dining experience.

Although we didn’t have room for dessert, every dish was executed flawlessly. The atmosphere of The Bull & Last, with its blend of warmth and sophistication, added to the overall charm of the evening. The staff were friendly, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable, making us feel welcome from the moment we walked in.

This visit was an absolute delight, and we cannot recommend The Bull & Last enough - not only for its outstanding dining experience but also for its beautiful accommodation offering. If you’re ever in or near Highgate, this pub should be at the top of your list, whether you’re looking for a memorable meal or a comfortable place to stay. It’s a true gem in London’s culinary scene.
