Whilst staying at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel we enjoyed their simple, classic afternoon tea service in the Podium Restaurant. We were seated next to the window, which is perfect for those who like to people watch over Park Lane. Service was prompt, and afternoon tea is served in two parts. The sandwiches are served first, followed by a selection of Miniature Fancies and scones.
To begin, we were served two fine glasses of Pommery Champagne, the only way to begin any afternoon tea. This was followed with their classic afternoon tea tiered stand with a delicate selection of sandwiches. We started with the Ciabatta Bread, with Cucumber, Cream and Chives, a smooth texture and flavoursome sandwich. There was also a Sundried Tomato Bread with Ham and Sun Blushed Tomato which was a delicious combination, a Multiseed Bread with Egg and Cress along with the Mixed Olive Bread with Prawn Cocktail and Lettuce, and finally the Rosemary and Olive Bread sandwich with Smoked Salmon and Horseradish. It’s evident that each and every sandwich has been carefully designed with the combinations of the different breads complementing each of the fillings, and the results were delicious.
Next we were served scones which included a selection of Plain and Raisin Scones, with Clotted Cream and Strawberry Jam. There are few pleasures more quintessentially British or more delicious on a pleasant afternoon than scones, and they didn't disappoint.
“There are few pleasures more quintessentially British.”
Next we had a selection of pastries which included the Dark Chocolate, Raspberry Parfait, Strawberry, and Almond Cake. Each pastry was more delicious than the last, the flavours were strong and there was a nice crisp bite with each mouthful.
Finally we enjoyed a selection of Miniature Fancies this included a Trio of Chocolate Mousse, Milk Chocolate Macaroons, Pistachio, Cherry and Chocolate Fancier, and a Flourless Dark Chocolate Dome and Tiger Print. A superb collection of fancies, each one providing a little slice of indulgence.
For the tea selection I choose a pot of The Full English. Billed as ‘Golden by name, golden by nature’, this is a classic English blend with a strong body and lasting taste. My partner opted for The Mighty Assam, a smooth, rich, and full-bodied tea, a very satisfying tea and the perfect accompaniment to our afternoon tea experience.
We had a wonderful experience, the service put on at the Podium Restaurant was excellent, and I’m sure we will be visiting again in the future.
