Marco Pierre White is one of the most famous, or infamous “celebrity chefs” in the country. Whatever your opinion of the person may be, his skills in the kitchen are beyond reproach.

The Indigo Hotel in Liverpool is a sleek, modern hotel near the city centre and an ideal venue for an MPW steakhouse. The décor is modern and bright, the atmosphere relaxed and the service impeccable. The scene is set perfectly for some great food.

The menu was a celebration of English cuisine, as you would expect. The dishes coming out of the kitchen looked colourful, well executed and seemed to meet with unanimous approval. It made us look forward to our own food even more.

We began with hors d’euvres of prawn cocktail. A traditional dish with a delicate, modern twist. The Marie Rose sauce was light with a great balance of flavours. The prawns tasted fresh and crisp and was a great introduction to the meal. An oldie, but definitely a goodie.

“Marco Pierre White at The Indigo is a celebration of English cuisine.”

For starter we had roast fillet of grey mullet with purple broccoli, English asparagus and radish. The mullet was cooked to perfection. It fell off the fork, tasted great and worked well with the vegetables. Asparagus is in season right now and these tasted as though they were fresh from the field, lovely!

Main course consisted of chateaubriand with onion rings, chips cooked in beef dripping, grilled tomatoes, buttered carrots, fine beans, sauce au poivre and béarnaise. We also had a side order of creamed potatoes.

The chateaubriand is the king among steaks and this was no exception. It was thick, juicy and cooked perfectly. The béarnaise sauce was the icing on the cake. The chips were also thick and perfectly cooked, with not a drop of grease. The only let down was the creamy potatoes, which were too salty for our taste.

With our meal we have a lovely wine, a Macon Rose from Burgundy. It was light, fruity and had an elegant sweetness that went well with each course. It was a well-balanced wine that we have purposely remembered so we can order it another time.

Our experience at Marco Pierre White at The Indigo was excellent. We were well looked after and the food was great. We will return.
