Alma de Cuba remains as one of my personal favourite restaurants in Liverpool. The restaurant is located within an 18th Century church and is beautifully designed with exposed brick throughout and soft candle light.

The building is full of charm and character, make no mistake the weekends can be wild with loud parties and rose petals being thrown over the crowds from the balconies. However, we visited during the week where you can find a more refined atmosphere and enjoy the fine food on offer.

The menu is wonderfully British and we enjoyed every mouthful we experienced during our visit. The staff at Alma de Cuba are passionate about their food and looking after their guests, and the chefs certainly know how to impress. We have visited a number of times over the years and have yet to leave disappointed.

“The building is full of charm and character.”

We started our evening with two glasses of Perrier Jouet, a deep pink champagne with interesting notes of lemon and toffee.

To begin we ordered the Normandy Baked Camembert with Pickled Grapes, Celery and Rye Croute. This was prepared wonderfully, the cheese was just the right temperature and texture and was most enjoyable. We also ordered the Sautéed king Prawns with Smoked Chilli, and a Chive and Garlic Butter. This dish was equally as delicious with well executed flavours.

For our main course we ordered the 16oz Chateaubriand for two, this was served with Flat Cap Mushrooms, Slow Roasted Tomato, Triple Cooked Chips, Confit Garlic Mash and a Three Pepper Sauce. The Chateaubriand was absolutely superb, we cannot speak highly enough of how well prepared this dish was was and the Confit Garlic Mash complimented this wonderfully.

Moving on to dessert we shared a Hot Chocolate Fondant with Honeycomb Ice Cream. The fondant was nice and moist in the middle and the Honeycomb Ice Cream completed this dish.

Our chosen wine for the evening was a bottle of 2012, J.Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon. A luscious, full-bodied wine with cherry, blueberry and vanilla notes. It’s easy to see why Alma de Cuba is one of my favourite restaurants, and we can’t wait to visit again in the future.
