The Jabbawockeez show at the Monte Carlo Hotel in Las Vegas was something I will never forget. We decided to visit while we were there on holiday, and we’re so glad we did. The show is a mix of hip-hop and theatre done so well it almost defied belief.
To get an idea, think Diversity with hip-hop music. Their M.U.S.I.C. production (pronounced muse I see) has just finished a world tour, and are back performing in Vegas. The gradual move to street dancing as a performing art has been a welcome one as far as I can see. The imagination and capability of some of these dancers is just amazing.
The production values are great, the music powerful and uplifting. The strong hip-hop leaning won’t be to everyone’s taste, but it was done is such a way as to not alienate anybody. We saw people of all ages and cultures in the audience and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
The guys on stage wear white gloves and masks during the performance. This actually works well as it allows you to watch their dancing rather than their faces. It’s a clever move that draws you into the performance in a surprising way.
The band themselves were formed in 2003 and hit the big time for competing and winning MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” in 2008. Since then they have been on TV, done tours, and are now in the Monte Carlo hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.
While being billed as “one-of-a-kind” they are an American version of Diversity, without the little guy to throw around. I don’t know about you, but I love watching that kind of performance. The energy, the imagination, and the ability of these dancers is impressive to say the least.
Jabbawockeez is a great show in a great spot. The Monte Carlo hotel is high class and a great venue for entertainment, a meal, and a flutter in the casino. The show alone is a good reason to visit, but even without that, it’s a great place to spend an evening. If you like hip-hop, house and a little retro-disco with your dancing them M.U.S.I.C. is the show to see.
