From the moment we arrived at Schlosshotel Kronberg, it was clear that this was not simply a hotel stay, but an experience shaped by history, elegance and a deep sense of place. Set high above the town of Kronberg im Taunus and surrounded by sweeping parkland, the hotel feels wonderfully secluded while remaining within easy reach of Frankfurt. The drive up to the property alone builds anticipation, with the castle gradually revealing itself through the trees, its towers and stone façade instantly evoking a sense of grandeur and timeless romance.

Schlosshotel Kronberg is a former royal residence, originally built in the late nineteenth century by Empress Victoria, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria. That royal heritage is not something merely referenced in brochures, it is felt throughout the property. From the architecture to the interiors, there is a tangible sense of legacy and refinement. Walking through the entrance halls and corridors, you are surrounded by ornate details, historic artworks and carefully preserved features that tell the story of the castle’s past. Yet despite its noble origins, the atmosphere is never intimidating. Instead, it feels welcoming and lived in, as though guests are being invited into a grand private home rather than a formal monument.

The location is one of the hotel’s greatest strengths. The surrounding parkland is vast and beautifully maintained, offering peaceful walks, views across the Taunus countryside and a sense of calm that is increasingly rare. The nearby golf course adds to the feeling of space and serenity, while the charming town of Kronberg with its timber framed houses and narrow streets lies just below. It is the perfect balance of countryside retreat and cultural access, allowing you to slow down while still feeling connected.

After exploring the grounds and public spaces, we were shown to our accommodation, the Castle Balcony Suite, and it quite literally took our breath away. The suite felt less like a hotel room and more like a private residence within the castle itself. Stepping inside, the sense of space was immediately apparent, with a beautifully defined living area and a separate bedroom that offered both comfort and privacy. Large windows flooded the rooms with natural light, framing views that changed throughout the day and made it impossible not to pause and simply take everything in.

"It is not simply the grandeur of the building or the beauty of the location that makes it special, but the way everything comes together so seamlessly."

The balcony itself was a standout feature and quickly became one of our favourite places to spend time. From here, the views stretched across the manicured park, the rolling landscape beyond and the historic surroundings of the castle. It was the kind of setting that encourages lingering, whether with a morning coffee, an afternoon book or a quiet moment as the light softened in the evening. There was something deeply restorative about being able to step outside into the open air while still feeling completely immersed in the castle environment.

Inside the suite, the design struck a thoughtful balance between historical character and modern comfort. Each space felt individual and carefully considered, with period furnishings, artworks and antiques that reflected the heritage of the House of Hesse. These elements gave the suite warmth and personality, avoiding the sense of uniformity that can sometimes be found in luxury hotels. At the same time, comfort was clearly a priority. The bed was exceptionally inviting, the seating areas encouraged relaxation and every practical detail had been attended to with care.

The overall feeling was one of understated luxury. Nothing felt excessive or showy, yet everything felt special. It was the kind of suite that made us want to spend time in it rather than rushing out, a place where the surroundings were just as much a part of the experience as the destination itself.

Dining at Schlosshotel Kronberg further reinforced the sense of refinement and attention to detail. Restaurant Victoria is set within elegant surroundings that reflect the castle’s heritage, offering views over the gardens that enhance the overall experience. The menu celebrates quality ingredients and thoughtful preparation, blending classic influences with a contemporary touch. Each dish felt carefully crafted, both visually and in terms of flavour, and the pacing of the meal allowed us to relax and enjoy the setting without feeling hurried.

The bar is equally impressive and provides a more informal yet still sophisticated space to unwind. With its rich textures, historic atmosphere and comfortable seating, it is the perfect place for an aperitif or a nightcap. Sipping a drink here, surrounded by the quiet elegance of the castle, felt like stepping back into another era, yet without losing the comforts of the present day.

Beyond accommodation and dining, the hotel offers facilities that encourage guests to fully embrace the slower pace of castle life. The grounds invite long walks and moments of reflection, while the connection to the nearby golf course adds another dimension for those who enjoy the sport. Service throughout the hotel was consistently attentive, warm and genuinely personal. From arrival to departure, the staff made us feel welcome and well cared for, always ready to assist while allowing the experience to unfold naturally.

It was fascinating to learn that Schlosshotel Kronberg has also served as a filming location for the Netflix drama Spencer. This revelation made perfect sense. The castle’s dramatic presence, historic interiors and atmospheric surroundings provide an ideal backdrop for storytelling. Knowing that the hotel has played a role in bringing such a visually rich production to life added yet another layer to its appeal, particularly for those who appreciate cinema and history intertwined.

As our time at Schlosshotel Kronberg came to an end, there was a shared feeling that this was a place we would remember long after leaving. It is not simply the grandeur of the building or the beauty of the location that makes it special, but the way everything comes together so seamlessly. History, comfort, service and setting are all in harmony, creating an experience that feels both luxurious and deeply personal.

Schlosshotel Kronberg is a destination in its own right. Whether visiting for a romantic escape, a special celebration or simply to experience a piece of living history, it offers something truly rare. Our stay in the Castle Balcony Suite was nothing short of unforgettable, and it left us with a genuine appreciation for a hotel that understands the art of hospitality while honouring its remarkable past.
