The Radisson Blu in Durham is part of the huge Radisson chain that spans England and some of Europe. This Durham location has a nice location, with a short walk to the city.
The exterior is a mix of steel, glass and traditional brick and gives a feel of the place long before you enter. The staff in the large reception weren’t the happiest we have seen. The greeting was perfunctory and we were checked in without any real connection.
We were lucky enough to secure the Presidential Suite, the best the hotel had to offer. We were looking forward to it. The suite was at the top in the roof, so had a sloping ceiling and large dormer-type windows. The space was large and airy with light colours on the walls and accents added by the furnishings.
“The Radisson Blu is a mixed bag with mostly friendly staff and a very corporate feel.”
There was a seating area with a couple of sofas and a coffee table overlooking the large window. There was a dining area, a bathroom, kitchenette, study room and a separate bedroom. The bedroom area was large, with a nice king-sized bed. The pillows were comfortable and the room continued the light, airy feel. The kitchenette had a coffee machine, a buffet area and tea and coffee making facilities.
The only downside to the bedroom was that it didn’t have a TV. While there were others in the suite, it would have been nice to watch something while gathering the energy to get up in the morning.
The bathroom was also large. It had a separate shower and bath, double sinks and plenty of toiletries. There was plenty of room for two to get ready without tripping over each other, which was ideal.
The Radisson Blu is a mixed bag with mostly friendly staff and a very corporate feel. The reception staff felt remote, but the service staff were nice. The suite was spacious, well-equipped, but lacked any real warmth or atmosphere. The hotel, and the suite were perfect for a city getaway though.
