Unfortunately the hotel’s fine dining restaurant "The Great Western" was closed for refurbishment during our stay, however this is set to reopen as of June 2023. We experienced Smith’s Brasserie, as the name suggests, it’s a brasserie and pub style cuisine. The restaurant has a large open plan space, and there is a casual atmosphere with a slight more modern offering within Bovey Castle.

To begin we ordered the English Pea Soup. A simple dish, but an enjoyable one. My partner ordered the Spinach, with Pear, Feta and Grilled Chicken Salad. A lovely blend of flavours and a well-presented dish.

“A casual place to dine with some interesting dishes.”

For our main course we ordered the Chicken Curry, with Fragrant Rice and Naan Bread. I love Indian cuisine and was excited to sample to this. I have to say, it didn’t disappoint. My partner ordered the Roast Lamb Fillet, served with Minted French Bean Salad and a Balsamic Dressing. We also ordered a side of Smith’s Triple Cooked Chips. The Lamb was cooked wonderfully, and we can’t fault the minted Fresh bean salad. It complemented the Lamb perfectly making this a delicious and well-executed dish.

To finish our evening we ordered the Crème Brulee, which was a fine example of a Brulee and I had no problem finishing it. As well as a Sticky Toffee Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream. Simple desserts, but enjoyable. Our wine choice for the evening was a bottle of 2012, Vieux Chateau Negrit Montagne Saint-Emilion, France. A vibrant and bright wine, with some interesting smoky notes and bright currant fruits.

Smith’s Brasserie offers a casual place to dine with some interesting dishes to sample. We had an enjoyable evening and wouldn’t hesitate to stop by again when staying at Bovey Castle.
