The Gwel an Mor Resort is near Redruth in Cornwall, a beautiful location on the Atlantic coast.
It’s a 5-star family resort with a mixture of self-catering lodges of different sizes. They are Scandinavian type wood lodges with steeply pitched roofs in the Swedish fashion. They look and feel so much better than other so-called “lodges” in other resorts that look more like sheds than homes.
There are 58 of them, spaced out enough so they aren’t on top of each other but close enough that you don’t have to walk miles to get anywhere. There is a clubhouse on site, which has a range of activities, a small pool, spa pool, gym, steam room and sauna.
Elsewhere on the resort, there is cycling rambling, a restaurant, spa and a range of organised activities for all the family. A great deal of effort has gone in to making sure nobody gets bored, that includes the adults.

Children are obviously well catered for here, with a multitude of activities, a mini farm, play areas and plenty of space to run.
Our lodge was a Tregea VIP Lodge, which had three bedrooms, a living area, kitchen and bathrooms. It had an upside-down configuration, with the three bedrooms downstairs and the living area upstairs to maximise the views from the balcony. The quality was very good, the place was clean, tidy and in good condition.
The main bedroom was en suite with a deck area outside with a sunken hot tub. The views were excellent. The other bedrooms shared a main bathroom which made up the ground floor.
Upstairs, the living room had seating, a coffee table and French windows to the balcony overlooking the lovely Cornwall coast. The view was fantastic and dominated our time in the lodge. Living in the city, it’s easy to forget that such beautiful places exists only a couple of hours drive away.
The living area also had a large LCD TV, internet access and a lovely wood burning stove. The skylight in the roof added an extra bit of character in the evening as you could see stars when the sky was clear enough.
The kitchen was fully equipped with everything you need to fix meals and look after a family for your stay. That included cutlery, crockery and a mini dishwasher. We didn’t cook much for ourselves though.
On our first night we ordered a takeaway pizza from the onsite facility. It was delivered quickly and was actually really nice. The other meals we ate at the Terrace, which is the main restaurant on site. The quality of the food is good and there is a real emphasis on using local produce from local growers.
During our stay we hired bikes. This is a popular pastime for visitors as there is an abundance of rides in and around the local area. The bikes were decent, Trek Hardtail Disc and were in good mechanical condition. The hire place also provides maps of the local areas and offered suggestions on places to ride. It was a very enjoyable experience.
I also had a men’s facial, which was superb. The spa on site has a full range of treatments provided by qualified beauticians. The facial lasted 45 minutes and was a real treat. It made me feel so relaxed, ideal for a short break in the sun.
We had a great time at Gwel an Mor. The staff made us feel welcome, the resort facilities are excellent and the lodge itself was top notch.
