Wivenhoe House Hotel in Colchester, is a grand country house hotel set within the University of Essex campus. A unique concept in the UK, the Winvenhoe House Hotel is home to Edge Hotel School, creating an opportunity for the young minds in hospitality to develop their skills while they create wonderful experiences for their guests.

The hotel itself it grand with a modern twist. A restored 18th Century Essex country house, exhibiting many traditional features while getting a 20th Century boost from a new modern wing known as the garden wing. With suites sponsored by famous hotel brands from across the UK, we felt that the Wivenhoe House Hotel provided high quality accommodation while also ensuring the passion and enthusiasm only found in the young minds of passionate trainees.

We stayed in the old wing of the house during our stay. Each room was designed with the sponsored brand in mind, and ours was based on the Exclusive Hotels Group. This base gave the design much scope to be stylish but in keeping with the traditions of the house, and it didn’t disappoint. Our suite was spacious and the views over the university campus were impressive, although we didn’t feel as though we were on a campus while inside.

“It was wonderful to enjoy, while feeling as though we were giving back.”

The suite was extremely well designed and we were pleased with its size. Every bit in keeping with the brand, the Exclusive suite provided a wonderful and spacious bathroom, large and comfortable bed and an impressive lounge area with television and mini bar. The designers had clearly had fun with the brand’s themes and had created a trendy but original take on Exclusive Hotel’s style.

The hotel also continued this fun and passionate ethos elsewhere and we were pleased to find a range of dining options available, including the hotel’s brassiere. The hotel also provides a number of lounge areas and has plenty of space for meetings and conferences, just another opportunity for the young staff to show off their talent under the watchful eyes of their professional mentors.

Although perhaps not the most convenient of hotels, if you’re looking to stay in Colchester this hotel provides excellent service and passionate staff. It was wonderful to enjoy, while feeling as though we were giving back to the hospitality industry by staying in this centre of learning.
