The Sorting Room, located in Cardiff, offers a culinary experience that blends sophistication, local flavours, and exceptional service. From the moment we stepped into the elegant ambiance of the restaurant, it was clear we were in for a treat. The staff’s friendly demeanour and attentiveness enhanced the evening, ensuring our visit was truly special.

The evening began with a toast that set the perfect tone for our meal. I sipped on a beautifully crafted Lemon Martini, a vibrant and refreshing start, while my partner chose the timeless Champagne Cocktail. The Martini struck a delightful balance of tart citrus and subtle sweetness, while the Champagne Cocktail’s effervescence and smooth undertones were a classy nod to tradition.

The first course was a showcase of bold flavours and thoughtful presentation. My partner opted for the Cream of Butternut Squash Soup, an exquisite blend of creamy buttermilk, truffle, and Parmesan. The dish was a comforting symphony of earthy and nutty notes, elevated by the aromatic depth of truffle. The silky texture paired harmoniously with the slight sharpness of Parmesan, making each spoonful a luxurious experience.

"The Sorting Room is an exceptional choice that showcases the best of Cardiff’s dining scene."

For my starter, I chose the Mediterranean Octopus, a dish that was as visually striking as it was flavourful. The tender octopus was complemented by the smoky richness of roasted chorizo and the fiery kick of harissa red pepper salsa. The spring onion aioli added a creamy counterbalance, while preserved lemon brought brightness and a zesty finish. The addition of seashore vegetables and herb oil added layers of freshness and complexity, creating a dish that was both adventurous and satisfying.

For the centrepiece of our meal, we indulged in the Châteaubriand for Two, an absolute masterpiece. Perfectly cooked to our preference, the beef was tender, juicy, and full of flavour. The dish was accompanied by a medley of delectable sides, including slow-roasted tomatoes bursting with sweetness, portobello mushrooms rich in umami, and roasted garlic, which provided a creamy and aromatic accent.

The Maris Piper triple-cooked chips were golden and crispy on the outside, with a fluffy interior that melted in the mouth. The Welsh ale onion rings were an unexpected highlight, boasting a light and crispy batter infused with subtle malty notes. To complete the dish, the Welsh whisky peppercorn sauce was a triumph, offering a silky, slightly smoky flavour that tied all the elements together beautifully.

We couldn’t resist adding a side of Green Beans, Broccoli, and Peas with Welsh Butter. The vegetables were cooked to perfection, retaining their vibrant colour and natural crunch. The Welsh butter added a touch of richness, enhancing the fresh and earthy flavours of the greens.

Although we decided to skip dessert, the exquisite flavours and textures we experienced throughout the evening left us confident that the restaurant’s sweet offerings would have been equally impressive. Based on the quality of the preceding courses, it’s clear that The Sorting Room takes great care in every aspect of their menu.

The attentive and personable staff truly made our evening unforgettable. They were knowledgeable about the menu, accommodating our preferences, and always ready with a warm smile. This level of service added a personal touch that elevated the entire dining experience.

The Sorting Room in Cardiff is a testament to culinary excellence and warm hospitality. From the carefully curated dishes to the inviting atmosphere and outstanding service, every detail is thoughtfully designed to ensure a memorable dining experience. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying an evening out, The Sorting Room is an exceptional choice that showcases the best of Cardiff’s dining scene.
