The Hartwell House Hotel and Spa is a delightful country house hotel in Buckinghamshire, just a couple of miles from Aylesbury. It is surrounded by green meadows, trees, and farmland. It’s only a few miles away from the motorway, but seems almost a world away.

The hotel is owned by the National Trust, and is run as a business. It’s one of a few houses in the area that the Trust owns, and one of the finer examples of country house hotels.

The house itself is a converted 17th century stately home. There are three buildings, the house, the Old Rectory and Hartwell Court, and the hotel is spread across them all. The complex has fifty rooms, including suites which are all of a high standard, and displays the history of the property to all who care to view it.

The approach to the house is impressive, for once the marketing material was right. It does look very Jane Austen. Reception was warm and friendly, and completely professional. We were processed and escorted to our room quickly and efficiently.

We didn’t have preconceptions of staying in a National Trust hotel as opposed to other hotel chains, but we did wonder if they would compare. First impressions were completely positive, which was great news.

We had the Duc de Berry Suite, which is the second largest in the main hotel. It is a large space with separate living and sleeping areas. It had all the comforts of a historical venue, with well-disguised accoutrements of the modern age.

The décor was traditionally elegant, with rich wallpaper, king-sized bed, soft furnishings all round, and traditional furniture. The large LCD TV was tucked away so as to not take anything away from the elegance of the room. Many hotels try and fail to mix the old and the new, but Hartwell House got it right.

The room has marvellous views overlooking the grounds. The sun was shining and the flowers were in bloom, which made the view all the more lovely. The long, thick curtains looked more than capable of keeping that sunlight out in the early hours.

The bathroom was a decent size, with a separate shower and bath. Everything was spotlessly clean and ready for us to enjoy. The room was light, warm and welcoming, much like the rest of the suite.

"Old-style elegance in the English countryside, one of Britain’s top hidden treasures."

The spa part of the hotel seemed very well appointed. There is a good sized pool, steam room, saunas, whirlpool bath and some treatment rooms. There is a hot tub on the terrace and a gym for those feeling energetic. Once you have worked up an appetite, there is the spa café and bar overlooking the pool, which is a nice way to finish off.

The staff in the hotel were some of the friendliest we have met. They were chatty, approachable and helpful, at any time of day. They seemed happy to talk, and offered more than traditional hotel staff do in way of conversation. It makes a nice change, and improves the welcome no end.

As the money raised from the hotel goes back to the National Trust, you don’t mind paying for a room or suite here, even if it isn’t up to scratch. Fortunately, everything we experienced at the Hartwell House Hotel was perfectly up to the standards we expect.

The condition of the hotel is good, the décor traditionally elegant, the service warm and friendly and the building and setting is excellent. We couldn’t fault it.
