Once the trading floor of the London Sock Exchange, Sauterelle offers fine-dining at its best. Located on the mezzanine level, this restaurant overlooks the café below and its surrounding shops, which is excellent for people watching. Although technically located with an arcade, the quality of shops here is very high-end. Whilst there, we decided we simply must experience the six-course tasting menu with wine pairing, but first, we began with an aperitif - a glass of Moet & Chandon.
“Sauterelle as a beautiful restaurant that’s out to impress”
Our tasting menu began with a course of scallop with lemon grass foam and black truffle. This course was light, yet rich and delicious and was complimented perfectly by a glass of 2012 South African Sauvignon Blanc.
The next course consisted of beetroot with truffle goat’s curd, lambs lettuce and toasted pine nuts. The flavours in this dish were truly beautiful, and again, perfectly paired with its matched wine - a 2013 Sancerre.
The third course involved a gorgeously indulgent black truffle risotto, paired with a crisp 2011, Chablis. This course led perfectly into the fourth, which consisted of red leg partridge with grilled cèps, savoy cabbage and a red win sauce; paired with a gorgeous 2010 Bourgogne.
A cheese course was next - Brie de Meaux with truffle honey and toasted walnut bread, paired perfectly with a sweet glass of port. It was an interesting twist to have the cheese before the dessert, but one that we enjoyed. I personally like to finish a meal on a sweet note, so this novel approach was refreshing for us.
Finally, we thoroughly enjoyed the white chocolate mousse with a hazelnut crumb, which was matched with a glass of 2007 Bordeaux.
For a restaurant that’s fairly open plan, it holds a special and intimate atmosphere. The food we experienced was truly wonderful, and their sommelier took the experience to the next level. We would thoroughly recommend Sauterelle as a beautiful restaurant that’s out to impress, and for us, impress it did.
