No. 131 is located in Cheltenham, this recently restored boutique hotel once stood derelict for seven years. The hotel has been lovingly restored to what it is now, which can only be described as a stunning boutique hotel. It’s been described as the destination for foodies and it’s easy to understand why. They have some excellent culinary offerings at the Crazy Eights restaurant.

The hotel is a beautiful Georgian Grade II townhouse which impresses before even stepping inside. Their reception desk is a twee desk tucked away under the staircase, and after a brief check-in our luggage was taken and we were shown to our “Excellent Room”. The room was fairly spacious and it was quite apparent the moment we stepped in that the furnishings in the room were high-quality from floor to ceiling. The hotel has done a great job of retaining its original character, blended perfectly with all of the modern elements you can want for in the present day.

“No 131 has created something truly special and unique.”

The room included a large plasma TV complete with SKY and Apple TV, an iPod docking station, WiFi throughout, an interestingly stacked minibar, an espresso machine, and my personal favourite touch which was a teapot and cups. A rare find in hotels nowadays, and finally the hot-water bottle complete with a hand-knitted cover, a nostalgic moment.

We must mention the bathroom. It was incredibly spacious, and beautifully designed, and was fitted with original pieces, some of which date back as far as 1875. These items have been locally sourced and refurbished, giving the bathroom a look and feel that you will struggle to find elsewhere. The bath takes centre stage, with the wooden attachment allowing you to lay back in the upright bath. The bath products are wonderfully British and thoroughly enjoyable, there was also a large walk-in shower big enough for adventurous couples. I wouldn’t usually mention the toilet, but in this case I have to as it had the old fashioned Victorian style pull-chain and was a joy to use. Finally, his and hers wash basins complete with bathroom necessities such as a wooden toothbrush and shaving products.

Taking a walk downstairs and exploring No 131 you will find various rooms on offer with a host of comfortable sofas, intriguing books and magazines, and the likes of Dom Jolly can often be found hanging out. No 131 has created something truly special and unique, it’s how I imagine a private members club should feel, which I’ve yet to find. A stay to remember, and one we recommend.
