The Lord Crewe Arms can be found tucked away in the wilds of the North Pennine moors, taking centre stage over the honey stone village of Blanchland. Built by Twelfth Century monks the building itself holds a wonderful wealth of history and character and provides just the spot for the perfect country hideaway in total isolation. It’s also good to note you will be free from phone calls and text messages during your visit, as the entire village is free from any mobile network, (although the hotel does have free Wi-Fi – so don’t panic!. Being owned by the Calcot Collection, you can expect all the added luxuries that this hotel group are known for along with friendly service, and a fantastic nights’ sleep.
During our visit we experienced one of their ‘Canny’ rooms on the ground floor of the cottages which offered views of the main hotel across the street. Although the room itself was not overly spacious, it was homely and full of warm character. The room boasted a wood burner with a basket full of logs that kept the room cosy and added a lovely ambiance. There was also a flat screen tv along with a desk for those looking to catch up on some work. Our room also included a cushioned window seat which offered the perfect spot to admire the pretty views of this charming village. Our bathroom was of a good size and featured both a bath and shower, with the bath offering the perfect place to rest after a day of exploring.
“It has a true sense of British hospitality and a wealth of character that makes it truly special.”
The Lord Crewe Arms boasts a wonderful pub on site - The Crypt - which is a honey trap for walkers and explorers of the North Pennines. This wholesome venue offers a cave type bar area as well as a restaurant that serves up seasonal dishes full of locally sourced ingredients. It offers a beer garden on a perfectly kept lawn making it the ideal spot for couples and families alike. The garden itself is in fact quite beautiful and a wonderful place to catch some afternoon sun.
If you can drag yourself away from the log fires and delicious food and drink, we can highly recommend a good walk on the moors whilst you’re staying at the hotel. With such natural beauty literally on its doorstep, it would be a shame not to explore whilst you’re there. This hotel is also dog friendly, should you wish to be accompanied by your four-legged friend. Come rain or shine, there’s something to keep you occupied in this beautiful location.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit at the Lord Crewe Arms and would highly recommend it to walkers and foodies alike, and generally anyone after a secluded countryside escape. It has a true sense of British hospitality and a wealth of character that makes it truly special.
