The Seven Sins of Eugenio Pirri

    Vice President, Dorchester Collection
    Eugenio Pirri
I was born in 1970 in Canada and you can say the hospitality and service business has been part of my life since I was a child.

My parents owned a local grocer that imported food and goods from Italy. I worked with them behind the counter, serving the customers and went from there. At 15 I started at my local McDonalds and entered their management programme at 16.

When I finished high school and following my gap year, I entered college studying Hospitality Administration before starting in my first hotel in both housekeeping and room service. At one point, I actually had 4 part time jobs on the go - I loved hotels and wanted to see them all.

After a few years in Food and Beverage, I moved into Accounts and then HR and have been there ever since. I love the people world. Seeing people develop, helping them on their journey, giving people jobs and seeing them succeed in life; that a real buzz for me.

I’ve always believed that you should do your job like you’re not afraid to lose it and in HR, this is a very true statement.

As the conscience of the company and one of the key drivers of organizational culture, you need to ensure both yours and your employees voices are heard for the betterment of the business. We’re all in it together to create a sustainable model; you have to really look at what is happening in your business as well as what is trending for the future. Curiosity is a key skill as change occurs whether you want it to or not, so ask questions and be prepared to guide yourself and your people through it.

I have always loved the hospitality world and travelling in general. I feel blessed to have a global remit and given that you can find a hotel and or restaurant pretty much everywhere in the world, the experiences you can have are limitless. I urge everyone to explore and become more culturally aware. It will bring us all together and create amazing respect for everyone in this great world.

Wrath - What makes you angry about the hospitality industry?
    Eugenio Pirri Seven Sins
I really get concerned when people say our industry is just for a transient workforce - ‘a great job while you’re in school or good for part time work’ - this phrase should not exist. We offer amazing careers and job opportunities where you learn not only great hospitality skills but life skills as well. These include working together, cultural awareness and respect for others just to name of few! We are PROUD of our industry!

Greed - If all your food fantasies came true what would be on your Plate?
    Eugenio Pirri Seven Sins
Assorted sushi - fresh sashimi - homemade carrot cake (no raisons please) for dessert! I had a chance to spend quite a bit of time in Japan and just fell in love with the fish market, of which I went to as much as possible. Fresh tekka-don for breakfast... YUM!

Sloth - What do you do to unwind?
    Eugenio Pirri Seven Sins
I love going to the movies. What a great release where you can just turn off your mind and fully immerse yourself in what it happening on the large screen. As my time is limited, it feels like a true indulgence… especially when the movie is good! Although I travel a lot, I still find travelling to be the best way to unwind. Unlike most people, I love airports and people watching and the experience of getting on that plane and knowing you will be experiencing something new on the other side is a luxury and helps me unwind and un-think!

Pride - What are you most proud of?
    Eugenio Pirri Seven Sins
I am proud of so many things but most of my relationships with my friends, family and co-workers. Having moved several times in my career and to multiple countries, I have had to make new friends and meet new people at work. This is daunting at times, but I am proud of the fact that I have a lot of great friends across the world now and that means a lot to me. Also, with my family back in Canada, I have formed strong relationships with my 4 nieces and loved my parents very much.

Lust - Is there anything that you are still lusting to achieve?
    Eugenio Pirri Seven Sins
I lust to keep travelling, to see the world and keep meeting great people. If things develop from there, then I am truly the lucky one.

Envy - who are you most envious of?
    Eugenio Pirri Seven Sins
No one really... I generally think that this would be a waste of time. If I want something bad enough, then I am the only one who can go and get it. Trying to be like someone or act like something is energy better spent doing something else. If you want it go for it. Risks can be a good thing when calculated properly!

Gluttony - have you ever over indulged?
    Eugenio Pirri Seven Sins
I would say yes to that… whether at a great restaurant or with a great bottle of scotch - for sure. Shopping is also a pleasure of mine and travelling allows me to truly indulge in this!
