The Marco Pierre White restaurant in Birmingham is inside the Cube building in the city centre. The building itself is modern and dominates the local skyline and is eminently suitable for the celebrity chef.

The venue is on the 25th floor, above the Indigo Hotel and offers exceptional views of the city. You get a 360 degree view from the large windows offering an unrivalled view of Birmingham.

We ate on a Sunday, meaning we had a limited menu, but the food available looked and tasted amazing.

Starter was prawn cocktail with Marie Rose sauce and a beetroot and goat’s cheese salad with walnut dressing. The prawn cocktail is experiencing something of a revival lately. This version was light, well-dressed and very fresh. The salad was also very fresh with crisp leaves, a light dressing and that nutty, earthy taste of walnuts.

“The Marco Pierre White restaurant has a polish and finesse that few informal dining experiences can equal.”

Main course was roast rump of lamb served with spinach, roast potatoes, cabbage and carrots and a 16oz T-bone steak with grilled tomatoes and chips. The lamb was cooked perfectly, with just a little pink in the middle. The meat was juicy, soft and ate very well. The vegetables were perfectly prepared, not greasy, wet, or overcooked.

The T-bone steak was a triumph too. The meat was tender, rich in colour and juices and quite decadent. It was one of those dishes where involuntary noises would follow each mouthful. Lovely.

Dessert was bread and butter pudding with Anglaise sauce and crème brulee with a sable biscuit. Following a meat course with bread and butter pudding may have made the meal a little heavy, but this pudding was great. The bread was fluffy, the top crisp and the level of sweetness was perfect.

The crème brulee was light, perfectly formed and again, was just the right consistency and sweetness.

The entire MPW experience was excellent. It has a polish and finesse that few informal dining experiences can equal. The food was great, the ingredients fresh, the composition superb and everything was as you would expect from Marco.
