The Malmaison Glasgow, a former 19th century church, which sits in the core of the city just off Blytheswood Square. The entrance, best absorbed at night, is theatrically lit and dramatic with an air of gothic glamour. The dramatic feel and theatrical décor continues inside the building, the foyer is lined with large pillars and is a small holding area for guests to pass through before you are transported to your boudoir. A strong use of bold powerful colours is used throughout the Malmaison, its signature chequer board carpets and walls hold pride of place. If a piece of music could define the Malmaison Glasgow it would almost certainly be Beethoven’s 5th symphony.

Our bedroom is located on the 3rd floor with a city view; our room is a good size and instantly promotes the Malmaison consistent qualities of luxury. Black and white striped carpet and complimenting lampshades are present which echo’s the drama, the bedding has a hint of the highlands with tweed throws backed with velour and matching pillows to add a decorative touch. The bathroom is slightly on the small side and in this particular room they have designed it to include the shower within the bath, apart from the size issue it’s finished to a high standard and provides ample space for a wash and brush up.

Breakfast is served in the crypt which is located in the basement of the hotel, a row of vintage aeroplanes hang from the ceiling as we pass through the bar, which is a sea of violet valour. We arrive in the intense dining area which still holds some of its original characteristics. Jet black walls, tables and furnishings, a few quirky touches, the cow print milk jugs for example give the dining hall a kitch stylistic feel. Our breakfast started off with a good sized bowl of bran flakes and some fresh orange juice along with 2 large pots of tea. This was followed by a cooked to order hot breakfast including bacon, grilled tomato, a field mushroom and two well-cooked poached eggs along with some thick cut granary toast.

The Malmaison provides a planned running route around the city which is a quirky touch for any fitness fanatic, this is essential and makes up for the small and under equipped room that they call ‘gymtonic’.

This Malmaison hotel feels fresh and contemporary and is a great addition to the Malmaison brand, the location is ideal and the surrounding square near the hotel is quite and peaceful, although you are still only five minutes from the city centre shop, bars and restaurants.
