The Waldorf Hotel in London’s Aldwych is an impressive building hidden behind a French chateau style façade. The Waldorf name is one of the most memorable in the hotel trade and is synonymous with quality. Fortunately our stay lived up to that ideal.
Its location is ideal if you’re visiting the city. It’s near to the theatres, Covent Garden, and the river. Everything is within walking distance but there are always taxis in front of the hotel if you don’t feel like it. There are also two tube stations nearby, allowing you to get that full London experience.
The building oozes old world charm, and hearkens back to the heyday of hotels. The décor is elegant and classy, but does look a little dated. This isn’t a modern stay, and inhabits the other end of the spectrum from so-called “boutique hotels.” That isn’t meant disparagingly at all, it’s just a warning that this venue will appeal to a more traditionally minded guest.
The reception area is quite small, but check-in went smoothly and staff were always very courteous and helpful. The interior maintains the traditional look and feel with high ceilings, lots of detailing, and a calm, almost hushed atmosphere.
Our room was of a good size, bathroom excellent. The very comfortable beds are worthy of mention here because we slept very well indeed. Apart from squeaky floors and no shelves to put clothes, there is everything here you would need. Minibar, flat screen TV, desk, armchairs, wardrobe and plenty of towels.
Service was good. We rang down for extra pillows, which arrived five minutes later. We were greeted every time we walked past the reception, and had the front door opened for us as we walked towards it.
Breakfast is excellent as you would expect at the Waldorf. We had never seen such an enormous buffet. Although everything you can possibly think of was present, there was also a separate menu to order from if you wanted something special.
The Waldorf Hotel oozes old English charm. It’s polished, it’s plush, service is great and the experience is one just begging to be repeated.
