Steam and Rye is located near the famous Leaden Hall Market in London. Being owned by Kelly Brook, we were excited to check it out. The restaurant’s marketing boasts quirky graphics and old school typography, so we were expecting something a little different...
To sum it up, the main restaurant area is similar to that of Grand Central Station; open plan with a busy and buzzy atmosphere.
R32;We began our evening with a couple of cocktails. We opted to try the Freedomartini – a fruity, vodka based martini with blackberry, vanilla and pineapple flavours – and a Five Dollar Shake – another vodka based cocktail, this time with passion fruit, vanilla and apple juice topped up with bubbly cream. We then tried a 20th Century, which was a blend of gin, lillet, crème de cacao and lemon; and a ‘Maize Balls, which consisted of Mount Gay rum, lemon, coconut and caramel popcorn syrup. The cocktails were interestingly presented, with the ‘Maize Balls being presented in a vintage American popcorn box and topped with real popcorn. They looked fantastic and tasted good too!
“If you’re looking for a fun restaurant with a buzzy atmosphere, this is the restaurant for you”
After our cocktails we sat down for dinner. To start, we opted for the tempura of squid and whitebait with piquillo pepper and lemon, and a salad of king prawns with a mango, chili and lime dressing.
For our main courses, we went for the rib eye steak with a peppercorn sauce and the fillet steak with a blue cheese sauce. We washed our meal down with a bottle of Cotes du Rhone, which was a great addition to our food.
The food at Steam and Rye is perfectly cooked with good flavours. We really enjoyed our evening. The restaurant has a very fun atmosphere, and is a great place for an informal dining experience. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend Steam and Rye as the place to come for a relaxed meal, however, if you’re looking for a fun restaurant with a buzzy atmosphere – this is the restaurant for you.
