We recently experienced afternoon tea at the Charlotte Street Hotel in Fitzrovia. Afternoon tea is usually served in the Oscar Restaurant or in one of their drawing rooms which are slightly more secluded and offer a relaxing place to indulge, thankfully we were able to enjoy the drawing room, the room is beautifully decorated and holds a special British charm, the afternoon tea service feels like a celebration of British-style culture. It’s a perfect example of how afternoon tea should be experienced. We opted for the gluten-free afternoon tea, the scones were a superb standard and possibly the best gluten-free scones we’ve had the pleasure to experience.
We opted to start our afternoon tea with a glass of Pommery Brut Rose, NV. A delicate, light rose, a perfect accompaniment to begin our afternoon tea.
Afternoon tea at the Charlotte Street Hotel is served on a 3-tier stand. We demolished the savoury selection on the bottom tier which included; salmon roulade with cream cheese and dill, hummus and red pepper, which was my personal favourite, the hummus had a lovely texture. There was also cucumber and mint, a falafel sandwich, and tomato and basil, all of which were superbly presented and very flavoursome.

We then moved on to the next tier which included the most delicious scones with clotted cream and jam which were a real treat. We then made our tea choices, I opted for the Halmari Assam, an interesting and flavoursome tea with flowery notes and a slightly malty flavour. My partner choose the Jasmine Pearls. This is a superb tea, each leaf is hand-rolled into a pearl shape and have a sweet jasmine taste delivering the most divine cup of tea.
Finally we enjoyed the sweet treats that had been sitting on the top-tier enticing us. There was carrot cake, lemon drizzle cake, chocolate brownie, a lemon sorbet shot, and mixed berries. Each was wonderfully fresh and beautifully presented, however the lemon drizzle cake was the highlight, it was soft, moist and delivered a strong citrus flavour.
We left the Charlotte Street Hotel more than impressed. Each and every is wonderfully presented and delivers on taste. A must for anyone who enjoys a spot of afternoon tea.
