This is a review of Hazlitt’s Hotel in London, a hotel that proves you don’t have to be big to be beautiful. Located in Soho, the hotel is a little hideaway in the middle of things, making it ideal for a city break.
The hotel is a traditional town house with a very understated entrance. Only a pair of topiary and the hotel name above the door gives it away during the day, ensuring that only those in the know can find it.
Inside, the hotel is a testament to Georgian architecture and decoration. The entrance hall and reception are large, with high ceilings and tasteful decoration. The plump furniture is comfortable and the curtains and art work set you at ease. It’s a cross between an authentic house from the 18th century and a gentleman’s club. A nice balance.
“Hazlitt’s Hotel has a definite historic bent.”
We had the Duke of Monmouth Suite, which was impressive to say the least. It has a bedroom, seating area, bathroom and a small terrace. The bedroom was richly decorated with a lovely rug, tapestry and large dresser at one end. The large oak bed has a coat of arms above it, rich red covers, plump pillows and a wonderfully comfortable mattress.
The bathroom echoed this grandeur with a large sculpture of an eagle that sat by the sink. The rest of the room was nice, clean, tidy and plenty of room to move around. The bath was in the bedroom with us, so the bathroom seemed really spacious.
The rest of the hotel has similar themed rooms named after notable British men and women and are decorated in a similar manner to ours. While it has a definite historic bent, it’s authentic feeling, not trashy-for-tourists like so many London venues. This feels real and was all the better for it.
We had breakfast on the terrace, which was a lovely way to begin our day. It made our stay that little bit extra special. That concluded our stay at Hazlitt’s Hotel, a stay we would happily repeat given the opportunity.
