The Grand Hotel in Brighton is such an iconic destination that we couldn’t visit there without trying the Kings Restaurant. The hotel itself is the epitome of English seaside culture. A throwback to Victorian England and taking the sea air. The building has such a history, and such an iconic position that you miss it at your peril.
The building itself is on Kings Road, which is directly across from the beach. It’s a prominent position with amazing views across the Channel. It’s within walking distance of everything in the city and a perfect base from which to see the sights.
Within the hotel is the Kings Restaurant, a place as grand as the hotel, with the same sense of charm and history. Our experience saw the high levels of service mirrored in the restaurant, which set the scene nicely.
We started with a seafood cocktail and a fishcake. Both were light, fresh and fragrant. The fish was fresh, as you would expect from being by the sea, and so was the garnish.
Main course was sirloin steak and a chicken breast, with sides of spinach, and chunky chips. The steak was well seasoned and cooked just how I like it. Brown outside, with a little pink in the middle. The chicken breast was juicy, glistening, and succulent. It fell apart when lightly prodded and almost melted in the mouth.
The sides were equally gorgeous. The spinach was deep, dark green and wilted perfectly. The chunky chips were just that. Chunky, lightly fried and not oily at all. They complemented the steak perfectly.
We had room for dessert, so we elected for the chocolate fondant and honey custard. Both were amazingly rich, but light at the same time. Chocolate is always such an indulgence, this was no different, only we didn’t feel guilty afterwards.
The service was excellent, the waiting staff were attentive and well versed with the menu. They took our plates swiftly, but left it long enough to ensure we had actually finished.
The Kings Restaurant complements the Grand nicely. They both try their best to make the customer feel special.
