Located on the outskirts of Winchester, Lainston House is a charming period property which is part of the Exclusive Hotels Group. This beautiful 17th-century country house provides an idyllic escape from the city. There is a wealth of history and charm throughout the property, and 63 acres of gorgeous countryside surrounding the property.

After a warm welcome we were shown to our Chapel Suite. Our suite consisted of a separate living area and bedroom. The living area included a beautiful wooden desk, an open fireplace, a set of large comfortable armchairs and a sofa, along with a welcomed nespresso machine. The suite is perfect for either relaxing or catching up on some work, and while there is a luxury, modern look, the decor still retains an authentic country house feel.

There is also a door which opens onto a private terrace area and garden offering some impressive views over the grounds. Moving through into the bedroom our favourite feature was the hidden TV unit that rises from the foot of the bed, another welcome touch that didn’t distract from the traditional features of this historic building. The bathroom was spacious and included a separate wet room and bath.

“This is what an escape to the country should feel like.”

The hotel’s expansive grounds are perfect for those who like to wander outdoors, or perhaps indulge in a game of croquet in the warmer months. The grounds are beautifully maintained and you’ll find plenty of wildlife to enjoy.

The hotel’s house restaurant is named The Avenue and here you will find some masterful culinary creations. The Cedar Bar sets the scene for a sophisticated evening with a drink or two, which can be enjoyed amongst the leather armchairs, ornate panelling, and roaring open fire. There is an afternoon tea service, and for those who aspire to reach culinary perfection themselves the hotel offers a cookery school.

Lainston House delivers a 5-star experience to remember. The attention to detail is magnificent and the rooms are incredibly comfortable. This is what an escape to the country should feel like, we enjoyed every minute and can’t wait to return.
