The Sheep on Sheep Street offers a causal gastro pub style restaurant and rooms for those looking to stay, it certainly appears to bring in a crowd from the local area. With a wood fired pizza oven, pizza is the restaurant’s speciality and it appears to go down very well with their diners – they even offer a gluten free base for those who are gluten intolerant.
The dining area is a vast space, and there are many options for tables. We chose a cosy window alcove that had a beautiful view out into the front garden. We were welcomed warmly, which was a taste of things to come, as the service was friendly throughout the evening.
We decided to sample a couple of cocktails as an aperitif, as they looked rather impressive. I went for the Bramble, which is a classic blend of Hawthorns gin, Chambord, blackcurrant jam and fresh lemon juice. My partner went for the Clover Club, which sees Bombay Sapphire gin blended with fresh lemon juice and grenadine. Both the cocktails were expertly put together, and it was clear that the team behind the bar here have great mixology skills.

To begin, I ordered the super food salad which was complete with quinoa, kale, avocado and almonds dressed in a ginger dressing. It was light and fresh and quite delicious, although a simple dish, the flavour combinations and textures worked superbly well together. My partner opted for the roasted beetroot with feta, orange and grains to start, which was also very well executed. We knew just from the starters that this is a restaurant that values high quality ingredients.
For our main courses we couldn’t resist the pizza offering. I went for a Margherita pizza which saw the usual tomato sauce, mozzarella and fresh basil, and I also added an additional topping of avocado; which worked very well. My partner chose the Milano pizza which included tomato sauce, Milano salami, chorizo, prosciutto, mozzarella and oregano. The pizzas were just sublime, and wonderfully authentic.
For dessert, we chose to share the ice cream selection, which we were pleasantly surprised to find out is sourced from just 20 miles away from a family-run ice cream business. The flavours were stunning; we sampled pomegranate, Cotswold cream and cherry yoghurt.
The wine we chose to accompany our meal was the 2015 Sauvignon Blanc, Mission Estate, Marlborough, New Zealand, which offered a wonderfully crisp, dry and aromatic palate.
We were suitably impressed by the Sheep on Sheep Street. For a relaxing, informal dining experience in Stow-on-the-Wold, you should look no further.
