The wallpaper was peeling off the walls. The plaster was scruffy and exposed. Someone had decided that an old door would make a great behead, and there was an ancient electricity meter hanging on the wall. Yet this was one of the smartest, most comfortable hotel rooms we have ever stayed in!

No, we aren’t a pair of winos dossing down at the Salvation Army Hostel, rather we were simply visiting the eclectic, eccentric, bohemian and thoroughly captivating boutique Hotel Story, in Riddargarten, in the heart of Stockholm.

“The Story Hotel has comfort, charm, and an artistic soul”

The (very) shabby chic décor of the Lily Dam Suite, which we chose for our stay, is tempered by stunning modern furniture, free wi fi, a raindrop shower, organic cotton bed linen and a luxuriously comfortable bed. Rooms designated “small” are tiny, but so delightful that you can forgive the feeling of being squeezed. Some double rooms even have bunks – perfect for friends sharing. Medium rooms are small, but you can swing a cat in them, and large rooms are fairly spacious.

The whole ambience is highly original and there are fascinating things to look at throughout the hotel. There are two rooms with small balconies, but the star of the show is probably The Attic Suite - a long room running the length of the building which even features an exercise bike and a kitchen.

Public areas are adorned with modern art, and even the cups and glasses used in the bar are specially created for Story. Bright, light, fresh colors abound, and the bar area has plenty of comfortable casual seating, ideal for relaxing and chatting to the interesting crowd, both locals and visitors, who gather at Story for the evening.

Unfortunately the restaurant wasn’t open when we visited, but we did enjoy the bar, with some intriguing cocktails and light bites. Located as it is in the heart of Stockholm, you can step outside and find some of the finest shops and restaurants in the city. All in all, we loved the bohemian atmosphere of the Story Hotel, which is great for the person who likes luxury travel with a twist.
