During our recent stay at The George Townhouse, which is located in the beautiful Cotswold market town of Shipston-on-Stour, we chose to dine at the hotel’s restaurant. The restaurant came highly recommended to us and it was also a good sign that the restaurant area appeared to be quite busy.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is relaxed and casual, serving up gastro pub cuisine in a contemporary setting. We were pleased to learn that a lot of the ingredients used were locally sourced.
When we entered the restaurant, we were greeted warmly and shown to our table by a friendly member of staff. We began our evening with two glasses of Laurent-Perrier Rosé Brut NV, which provided the perfect aperitif. The pretty pink colour and red fruit notes, perfectly balanced, offered just the right amount of sparkle to the start of our night.

We were pleased to note that the restaurant caters well for allergies, and we dined from the gluten free menu. To start, I opted to try the ham hock and apple terrine, which came served with fig and apple chutney and toasted gluten free bread. The terrine was wonderfully executed, and perfectly complimented by the sweetness of the chutney. My partner went for the creamed wild mushrooms and artichokes on gluten free bread, served with a poached egg and truffle oil. This was a decadently rich dish.
For my main course, I chose the roasted sea bass served with pesto crushed potatoes, grilled fennel and sauce vierge. The fish was cooked to perfection and the addition of pesto to the potatoes was a very pleasant touch. My partner opted for the 10oz rib eye steak with triple cooked chips and peppercorn sauce. The meat was very tender, and again, cooked very well and well presented.
For our side dishes, we opted for the savoy cabbage and bacon, as well as the dauphinoise potatoes, both choices worked well with our main dishes, the savoy cabbage with bacon was a particular favourite.
To drink, we decided on a bottle of the 2015, Mission Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand, which was pale yellow in colour with notes of tropical fruit.
We had a lovely evening all-in-all, and would certainly stop by this restaurant in the future and suggest you do the same if you’re looking for somewhere to dine in Shipston-on-Stour.
