Tucked away inside the grand Close House Hotel, Argent D’Or restaurant is the perfect combination of traditional and modern, with striking décor and a detailed finish. The room immediately feels bright and airy, and the theme throughout the room brings a refined but inviting atmosphere to an already impressive space.

We were seated at our table and ordered a bottle of Ruca Malen, Malbec, Argentine, 2010 before ordering our starters. To begin, I enjoyed sautéed king prawns served with crispy pork bely, smoked sweet potato and thyme jus. Although a rich starter, the dish was perfectly balanced ensuring that the accompanying ingredients did not overpower the delicate flavour of the prawns.

My guest enjoyed homemade gnocchi as a starter. This dish was served on a bed of spinach with parmesan shavings. A simple dish, the gnocchi focussed on only a few key flavours but each was represented beautifully and the homemade gnocchi in particular was delicious.

“Our evening at the Argent D’Or was thoroughly enjoyable on every level and we were particularly pleased with the passion and friendly attitude of the staff.”

For my main course I chose the roast lamb loin served with crisp belly, broccoli puree, goats curd, jersey royal potatoes and olive. The lamb was beautifully cooked and had a very deep flavour, perfectly accompanied by the crisp belly. The goats curd also made a particularly enjoyable but unusual addition to the meal and complimented the flavours well.

My guest chose the 8oz fillet accompanied with confit tomato, grilled field mushroom, onion compote, watercress and beautifully cooked chips. The dish was very impressive and delivered the classic satisfaction that you expect from any fillet dish, but with added finesse that elevated it to a higher level.

To finish our delicious meal, we chose to share a selection of homemade sorbets including lemon, raspberry and mango. Each sorbet perfectly represented its flavour and we were very pleased with the high quality of these seemingly simple iced desserts.

Our evening at the Argent D’Or was thoroughly enjoyable on every level and we were particularly pleased with the passion and friendly attitude of the staff, who made our evening all the more enjoyable.
