They say you should never judge a book by its cover, and the same is true for the Grand Hotel et de Milan. The large building sits discreetly at the side of the road, but don’t be fooled by its simple exterior; inside this hotel lays a wealth of history and surprise.

Grand Hotel et de Milan, located a stone’s throw away from Milan’s fashion district, was once home to celebrated composer, Master Giuseppe Verdi, who lived there for around 30 years. Grand Hotel et de Milan was in fact the very place in which some of Verdi’s most infamous compositions were written, including ‘Othello’ and ‘Falstaff”. We were very excited to learn that the very same desk Verdi worked from actually still belongs at the hotel, and is maintained each year to keep it in immaculate condition.

“With history in abundance and a famous client list, this hotel’s effortless style is as impressive as it is culturally rewarding.”

We were fortunate enough to experience the Verdi Suite during our stay, which was a special treat, given the hotel’s history; and it did not disappoint. Entering the suite was a jaw-dropping moment, not only because of its luxurious elegance, but also because of the sheer awe-inspiring history.

The suite itself, although recently restored, has kept its traditional décor and boasts a wealth of period features. The original chimney is just one of its fantastic features. The suite comprises of a bedroom, sitting room and two bathrooms. Staying in the Verdi suite is akin to being transported in time; it is both a relaxing and inspiring place.

The restaurants at Grand Hotel et de Milan are also an exciting experience. There are two restaurants, The Caruso restaurant and the Don Carlos restaurant. The Caruso restaurant is the ideal place for cocktails and dinner, with a Parisian influenced interior featuring a veranda overlooking the Croce Rossa Square, the restaurant is synonymous to a French bistro. For lunch, we recommend trying the Don Carlos restaurant, which is a private and refined experience. The hotel also boasts a comprehensive bar. Gerry’s bar has an impressive wine list. Well worth a visit for a pre or post dinner drinks.

Grand Hotel et de Milan come highly recommended by us as a must stay for anyone who appreciates the more traditional type of hotel. With history in abundance and a famous client list, this hotel’s effortless style is as impressive as it is culturally rewarding.
