“Smiths” of Smithfield can be found right inside the action of London’s only working meat market - Smithfield Market. The Grade II listed building boats four floors of restaurant, boasting menus that promote the use of market fresh meat from only the highest quality.

We went for dinner at the Top Floor restaurant at Smiths of Smithfields, and had a great night. The restaurant features a seasonal outdoor terrace, complete with fabulous views. Unfortunately during our visit, it was too cold to use, however it looks fantastic and we would definitely return to eat out there.

“We were impressed that the menu goes into so much detail”

We began our evening with an aperitif – two glasses of Charles Heidsieck Champagne, which went down very nicely as we perused the menu and made our choices.

To start, we went for the salt and pepper squid with crisp lotus root, roast garlic, coriander and chili sauce; and the braised beef tortellini with spring onions, kohlrabi and carrots served in a beef broth.

For our main courses, we simply had to try the steak, and we’re very glad we did. We opted for the 8oz Shorthorn fillet steak from Aubrey Allen in Warwickshire, and the 10oz South Devon sirloin from Steve Turton in Newton Abbot. We were impressed that the menu goes into so much detail as to where the meat comes from, and it made choosing that little bit more interesting.

Our highlight for dessert was the lemon textured cheesecake. It tasted divine and the presentation was exquisite.

We washed down our meal with a delicious French Malbec that the wine list stated was ‘Super with Steak’, and it certainly was.

All the food we experienced at the Top Floor restaurant of Smiths at Smithfield was impeccable. The market fresh meat made all the difference, as the flavours were superb. Not only that, but everything was cooked to perfection.

Our meal was faultless and for that reason we could not recommend it highly enough – we look forward to returning and experiencing the terrace!
