Boulestin, located in St James, London, is a stunning restaurant serving up delicious French cuisine. Having recently opened in September 2013, Boulestin is a great new addition to the St James’ scene.

Founder Joel Kissin pays homage to Xavier Marcel Boulestin in everything this restaurant has to offer. Boulestin was a renowned food expert and writer, and proprietor of the original Boulestin restaurant, which graced Covent Garden from 1927-1994.

Joel Kissin’s patriotic nostalgia shines through the restaurant’s menu, which features many dishes from Boulestin’s pre-war cookbooks.

“We can see why this restaurant has become so popular”

When we arrived at Boulestin, we were excited by the restaurant’s grand cream and gold façade. Upon arrival, we were greeted by very friendly staff who showed us to our table and made sure we were comfortable. As an aperitif, we opted for a glass of ‘R’ de Ruinart Brut, which was the perfect start to our evening.

We took our time studying the menu before making our choices. The menu is interesting with its combination of classic dishes with a contemporary edge. To start, we chose the game terrine of guinea fowl, pigeon and rabbit, served with glazed figs; and the pan-fried scallops with butternut squash, pine nuts and sage.

The flavours and presentation were exquisite and we were left in great anticipation of our main courses.

For our mains, we opted for the braised lamb shoulder with flageolet beans and root vegetables; and the fillet of beef bordelaise with bone marrow and red wine sauce. As sides, we went for the sprouts and chestnuts and the pommes puree.

These dishes were exceptionally well produced. Cooked to perfection, the flavour combinations are divine, and the presentation is simply beautiful.

Our previous courses certainly satisfied us, but we wanted to sample dessert, so we chose to share the flourless chocolate cake with crème fraîche ice cream; and we were very glad we did. It was beautiful, and the perfect end to a delicious meal.

We chose a bottle of the Bourgogne Pinot Noir to accompany our meal, and it went down only too well.

We would certainly recommend Boulestin as a fantastic restaurant in the heart of London. It offers endless style and sophistication, as well as excellent food, fine wine and friendly staff. We can see why this restaurant has become so popular, and we certainly urge you to check it out if you have the opportunity. We will certainly be going back.
