The George Hotel in Hamburg is a self-proclaimed “boutique” hotel which makes us immediately suspicious of the quality. For the most part, those fears were unfounded.
The location is nice, next to the Alster Lake and not far from the city centre. The exterior is typically Germanic, concrete, square and austere. Inside is slightly friendlier. The interior is nice, with good décor and a very European feel. Some of the public areas seem to celebrate England, with pictures of London, English books and a real taste of home.
Our Size M room was a reasonably size for a city hotel, the bed was nice and comfortable, the covers crisp, white and clean and the pillows nice and firm. The rest of the room was well decorated with subtle shades of colour and decent quality fixtures and fittings.
There was a small seating area with a couple of leather armchairs to relax in by the window and enough room to move around in without tripping over each other. The bathroom was also nice, with a nice shower and plenty of light.
“The George Hotel left us feeling happy.”
There were downsides to the room however. Firstly, the shagpile carpet. While we are fans of this resurgent fashion, we have to wonder how effective the cleaning of it is. It looks good, but doesn’t strike us as particularly practical. There was also a funny odour to the room. Nothing too exotic, but off-putting nonetheless.
The rest of the hotel has a bar and restaurant, called Restaurant DaCaio and a bar with a roof terrace, Bar DaCaio. Both were reasonably sized, with the outside space having nice views of the water.
We were well looked after and the location is a good one. It was nice to have a view of the water while sipping a cold drink in the sunshine, which left us feeling happy. We would visit here again if we revisited Hamburg.
