During a recent stay at the Hilton Hotel in Cardiff, we decided to try out their latest addition - the Grey restaurant. This modern yet casual restaurant serves up an array of British classics, with excellent service that is both prompt and welcoming. The restaurant offers seating both inside and outside. Unfortunately during our trip we decided to dine inside, as the weather wasn't too pleasant.

We were welcomed on arrival and shown to our table where we perused our menus. For my starter, I chose the crushed avocado with chilli on toast which came served with a poached hen’s egg. This was the perfect appetiser, the avocado was wonderfully ripe and the egg perfectly poached.

My partner chose the Grey’s Feel Good Salad to start, which saw a mix of quinoa, avocado, butternut squash, sweet potato, tender stem broccoli, golden and candy striped beetroots, pomegranate, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, pine nuts, chilli and lime. Again, the flavours were remarkably fresh and we were left in great anticipation of our main courses.

“This modern yet casual restaurant serves up an array of British classics, with excellent service that is both prompt and welcoming.”

For our main courses, I chose the sausage and mash which saw locally made pork sausages served with delicious caramelised onion mash, a British classic done very well. My partner chose the battered fish with skinny chips, mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce. The fish was perfectly cooked. As a side dish, we ordered the spinach with garlic which complimented our meal perfectly.

To accompany our meal we savoured a bottle of Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand, which brought that wonderful fruity crispness that only new world wines can deliver.

We simply couldn’t pass on dessert, so I chose the warm apple crumble served with locally made gingerbread ice cream, and my partner chose the Eton Mess with Wye Valley strawberries and meringue. They served to finish of our meal wonderfully and we were left very satisfied.

Grey restaurant is a fine addition the both Cardiff and the Hilton Hotel and we wouldn't hesitate to return on our next trip to Cardiff.
