Stoke Park, the hotel, spa and country club located in Buckinghamshire, is also home to Humpry’s Restaurant; a 3 AA Rosette-Awarded restaurant that really lives up to its reputation. On a recent visit to Stoke Park, it was a natural choice to dine at Humphry’s having been impressed previously, so we could not wait to return. With impeccable food and service, and the restaurant’s location overlooking the hotel’s impressive grounds, this truly is a special restaurant.

Located inside the hotel’s grand dining room, the floor-to-ceiling windows offer an abundance of natural light which provides a special atmosphere to the space. As the day turns into night you can expect a beautiful relaxing ambiance from the change in lighting across the surrounding landscape.

When we arrived, we were greeted warmly and shown to our table where we ordered two Negronis. These were expertly crafted and saw a mix of Sipsmith gin, Campari and Martini Rosso. We enjoyed our cocktails as we browsed the menu and made our choices.

For our starters, my partner went for the game consommé which was served with a wonderful marriage of wood pigeon croquette, button mushroom and truffle mayonnaise. This decadent dish was certainly a highlight of our evening, with wonderful earthy flavours and the perfect balance of seasoning. I opted for the rabbit terrine, which was served with mustard seeds, pickled carrots, prune and Armagnac puree, as well as cumin crackers. Again, the flavour combinations were wonderfully balanced, and the dish was beautifully presented.

“With impeccable food and service, and the restaurant’s location overlooking the hotel’s impressive grounds, this truly is a special restaurant.”

For our main courses, we both decided on the same tempting dish; the fillet of Brookfield Farm beef complete with oxtail and Marmite ragout, shallot puree, king oyster mushroom, bone marrow crumb and a red wine jus. The meat was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth it was so tender. The sweet shallot puree helped to balance the rich flavours, and the jus really brought the whole dish together. As side dishes, we added the courgette with pesto and creamed potatoes. Both were excellent accompaniments, and were perfectly prepared.

We simply could not pass on dessert, so my partner went for the pear crumble soufflé, complete with creme anglaise and blackcurrant ice cream; and I went for the spiced apple and blackberry mousse complete with Granny Smith gel, poached blackberries, home-made granola and cinnamon ice cream. These desserts were indulgent and decadent and everything desserts should be. Humphry’s failed to disappoint once again.

To accompany our meal, we chose the 2014 Chateau Mont-Redon Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, France, which is an incredibly well balanced wine with earthy flavours and distinct notes of blackberry and cherry.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Humphry’s at Stoke Park once again. For a great meal in a superb location, you can’t go wrong and we cannot wait to return.
